Frequently Asked Questions
1.Which versions of Windows are supported?
- Windows 2000, XP, 95/98, Server 2003.
- Windows Vista is NOW supported. You will need either the Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise edition. It is possible for other editions of Windows to be supported through some trickery in the Windows registry. The supported editions are Business, Ultimate and Enterprise. You will need to configure the Vista computer to "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)" This is in the system properties window under the remote tab. You can find this by clicking the start button and typing “system”, click on “system” then “remote settings” on the left.
- Windows Server 2008 is NOW supported, however Terminal Services Gateway is not supported. You will need to configure the server to "Allow connections from computers running any version of Remote Desktop (less secure)" This is in the system properties window under the remote tab. You can find this by clicking the start button and typing “system”, click on “system” then “remote settings” on the left.
- Windows XP Home out of the box is not supported. This is because Microsoft removed the services that accept remote desktop connections from this version of the operating system. There is a solution to this however, but it requires a little extra work. This guide can walk you through the steps of getting remote desktop services setup on your XP Home machine. If you have purchased WinAdmin with the expectation of XP Home working out of the box, you should re-read the WinAdmin product description on iTunes.
- If you are attempting to connect to Windows Media Center computers, make sure that the media center interface is not already running when you attempt to connect. Microsoft has acknowledged that Windows Media Center is not ideal for using remote desktop connections so your mileage may vary.
2.Where is the “Send CTRL+ALT+DELETE” button?!
- This feature has been added in version 1.0.1. Press the icon in the top right corner of a remote desktop session. The icon looks like a small gear.
3.Can I connect to servers using non-standard port numbers?
- Yes you can. This feature has been added in version 1.0.1.
4.How do I connect to my home computer remotely?
- This will generally require some basic understanding of networking as your home router or wireless access point will need to be configured to allow RDP traffic from the Internet to flow to your home computer. Unfortunately I cannot support the home network setups of every individual who purchases this application so you will have to do some research on your own. Google is a great starting place. Here is an excellent tutorial that I have found.
- After reading the above tutorial, please visit www.portforward.com for excellent instructions on how to setup port forwarding on just about any make and model of router.
5.How do I connect to my work computer remotely?
- This will probably require the assistance of your business’ network administrator. Most business networks are protected by firewalls and allow remote connectivity via a VPN connection. The iPhone and iPod Touch both support VPN connections so your administrator should be able to help you with the settings needed to do this. Again, as in the question above, I am unable to support the business network setups of every business. If after working with your network administrator you are still unable to gain connectivity, then please contact support.
6.I setup a VPN connection to my business but it is still NOT working.
- Some folks have have been able to connect to their workplace via VPN but find that they still cannot connect. My suggestion is to make sure you are using an IP Address for the hostname rather than a DNS name. This is either a bug in Apple’s software or is due to a misconfiguration of the VPN connection, but it appears that sometimes DNS resolution does not work correctly and so an IP address is required. If you want to test your VPN connection, open Safari after establishing your VPN connection and attempt to access an Intranet resource on your network. If you are not able to access such a resource then your VPN connection is NOT configured correctly or your DNS resolution is not working.
7. Is there an option to connect to the console session?
- YES there is. This feature is available as of version 1.1.0.
8. WinAdmin crashes when I open up a particular application on the Windows computer. What’s the deal?
- Please update WinAdmin to version 1.1.0 to resolve this issue.
9. When I open up Microsoft Word or Microsoft Outlook, some areas of the screen are black when they should be white.
- Please update WinAdmin to version 1.1.0 to resolve this issue.
10. I don’t live in the United States and I am unable to purchase WinAdmin. Will it be available internationally?
-ABSOLUTELY! It will be available internationally in the next few weeks. Please stay tuned!
